Comparison of the effect of teach-back method and video clip teaching on the sense of coherence of mothers with children suffering from asthma

Aims: The aim of this study was to compare the effect of teach-back method and video clip teaching on the sense of coherence of mothers with children suffering from asthma. Materials & Methods: In this field trial study 75 eligible mothers with children suffering from asthma were selected by convenience sampling method, but were randomly divided into three groups of: video clip group, teach-back method group and control group. In video clip group, training was performed through a 15minute clip. In teach-back method group 8 training sessions were held. Demographic questionnaire and Antonovsky's Sense of Coherence scale-13(SOC-13) were used to collect data at baseline and also one month after the intervention. Results: Before the intervention, there was no statistically significant difference in the overall score of sense of coherence and its subscale in the experimental and control groups (P >0.05). there was a statistically significant difference in the mean total score of sense of coherence and its subscales between the two groups of video clips and teach-back method with the control group(P <0.05). There was a significant difference between the two intervention groups after the intervention, the mean scores of the comprehensibility subscale in the teach-back method group compared to the video clip group (P = 0.03). However, no significant difference was observed in the subscales of manageability and meaningfulness in the two groups (P >0.05). Conclusion: Both video clip and teach-back method improved mothers' sense of coherence, but teach-back method was more important and more effective than video clip
